Eu descobri o mundo das zines aos 16 quando li a biografia sobre a vida de Kurt Cobain chamada “Mais Pesado que o Céu”. Nela, o autor Charles R. Cross, discorre entre outras coisas, sobre o relacionamento entre Kurt e a baterista da banda Bikini Kill, Tobi Vail. Kurt não foi o único a ficar impressionado com uma das pioneiras nas zines de Olympia. Quando eu pesquisei sobre o movimento que ela ajudou a criar, o riot grrrl, a partir de sua zine, Jigsaw, isso mudou a minha vida. Eu estava na minha adolescência e em busca de identificação e me deslumbrei com as inúmeras possibilidades de expressão própria que podem ser postas em um papel. Nas zines, Tobi falava muito sobre a falta de espaço feminino na cena underground e criava pequenos manifestos que logo se tornariam a base do riot grrrl. Faz tempo que Vail não lança zines e não posta em seu blog no qual comentava, entre outras coisas, sobre as edições da Jigsaw.
I found out the world of zines at 16 when I read Kurt Cobain’s life biography “Heavier Than Heaven” . In it, author Charles R. Cross discusses, among other things, the relationship between Kurt and Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail. Kurt was not the only one impressed by one of the pioneers in the Olympia zines. When I researched the movement she helped create, riot grrrl, from her zine, Jigsaw, and it was a game changer to me. I was in my teens and looking for identification and I was dazzled by the myriad possibilities of self-expression that can be put to paper. In the zines, Tobi talked a lot about the lack of female space in the underground scene and created small manifestos that would soon become the basis of riot grrrl. It’s been a long time since Vail has neither launched zines nor posted on her blog ,in which she would comment among other things, on Jigsaw editions.
Apesar disso, tomei conhecimento do quão vasto é o mundo das zines e em 2017, criei a minha, “I Wanna Be Yr Grrrl”, nome inspirado por duas músicas que sou apaixonada: I Wanna Be Your Dog do Stooges e I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone do Sleater-Kinney. Alguns anos antes disso, criei uma página Riot Grrrl no Facebook e comecei a me comunicar com riot grrrls de outras partes do mundo, algumas delas também eram zineiras. Ao ter oportunidades de expor as zines em eventos locais, conheci zineiros das antigas e ao divulgar meu trabalho na página, apareceram os pedidos de trocas de zines. Desde então, tem sido nostálgico e revigorante ler os trabalhos de pessoas de diversas partes do mundo e que fazem zines há mais tempo que eu. Essa rede de trocas soa analógica, mas não precisa ser. Por isso decidi escrever um post no medium sobre zines que li em 2019 de forma que isso motive mais pessoas a aderir a essa forma de arte DIY (faça você mesmo), que pela sensibilidade crítica e artística, jamais poderá ser antiquada e cessada.

Despite this , I became aware of how vast the world of zines is and in 2017 I created my own, “I Wanna Be Yr Grrrl”, a name inspired by two songs I love:I Wanna Be Your Dog by Stooges and I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone by Sleater-Kinney. A few years before that, I created a Riot Grrrl Facebook page and started communicating with riot grrrls from other parts of the world, some of them were zinesters as well. When I had opportunities to exhibit the zines at local events, I met old school zinesters, and by publicizing my work on the page, requests for a zine trade appeared. Since then, it has been nostalgic and uplifting to read the works of people from around the world who have been zinesters longer than me. This network of exchanges sounds analogical, but it doesn’t need to. So that’s why I decided to write a post on medium about the zines I read in 2019 in order to motivate more people to join this DIY art form, which by its critical and artistic sensibility can never be outdated and ceased.

Escarro Napalm/Femme Fatalle
A segunda zine que teve impacto na minha vida foi a série de edições da Escarro Napalm (1991–1995), feita pelo meu amigo conterrâneo Adelvan Kenobi. Selecionei duas imagens para esse post a fim de ilustrar o quanto esses desenhos femininos me fascinaram. Jigsaw e outras zines riot grrrls também os trazem, mas o diferencial é que a Escarro/Femme foi a primeira cópia física que tive. Através da minha página, conheci a artista Bárbara Olops, que topou fazer umas ilustrações inspiradas no Pussy Riot e na Tank Girl para a zine de número 6. A presença de quadrinhos com humor ácido, colagens manuais com fotos de roqueiros, e sobreposições presentes nas minhas zines 5 e 6 foram totalmente inspiradas por aquelas feitas nas edições da Escarro. A estética oldschool é realmente a mais empolgante!

The second zine that impacted my life was the Escarro Napalm series (1991–1995), edited by my hometown friend Adelvan Kenobi. I selected two images for this post to illustrate how fascinating these female designs have been to me. Jigsaw and other riot grrrl zines also bring this type of design, but the difference is that Escarro / Femme was the first physical copy I had. Through my page, I met artist Bárbara Olops, who came up with illustrations inspired by Pussy Riot and Tank Girl for zine #6. The presence of acid cartoons, manual collages with pics of rockers, and overlays in the zines 5 and 6 were totally inspired by those made in Escarro issues. The old-school aesthetic is the most exciting!

Vinyldyke
Vinyldyke é nome da zine e da gravadora realizadas pela artista alemã, Evelyn Smith. A primeira edição da zine traz os relatos de uma Evelyn de múltiplas identidades: grunge, lésbica, artista, viajante e grande entusiasta da banda The Breeders. Para quem ama histórias de fãs que fazem de tudo pelos artistas que idolatram, porque sabe que a música traduz a nossa trajetória, vinyldyke é a zine ideal. As histórias de amor vão desde camisetas grunge antigas até gritos e mais gritos para que Kelley Deal toque sua música preferida em um show do Breeders. A parte mais criativa e que me inspirou nessa edição foi a ideia de fazer uma zine lado B, tornando-a mais oldschool do que já é. Também trago relatos meus como fã, principalmente na #6, na qual falo sobre o show do L7 que fui em Porto Alegre em 2018. Eu e Evelyn compartilhamos o mesmo entusiasmo por bandas femininas grunge. Vinyldyke is the name of the zine and record label by German artist Evelyn Smith. The first issue of zine features the stories of an Evelyn with multiple identities: grunge, lesbian, artist, traveler, and great enthusiast of The Breeders. For those who love those stories of fans that do everything for the artists they idolize, because they know music reflects their trajectory, vinyldyke is the ideal zine. Her love stories range from old grunge t-shirts to shouts and more shouts for Kelley Deal to play her favorite song at a Breeders concert. The most creative and inspiring part of this issue was the idea of making a B-side zine, making it more oldschool than it already is. I also have my fan stories, especially at # 6, where I talk about the L7 concert I went to in Porto Alegre in 2018. Evelyn and I absolutely share the same enthusiasm for grunge female bands. And you?

St. Sucia
St. Sucia é uma zine colaborativa fundada por Isabel Ann Castro e Natasha I. Hernandez. A oitava edição chamada “Sangre y Agua” traz relatos, poesias e ilustrações de garotas Américo-latinas que catalisam dores e alegrias suas e de suas mães, tias e avós. São autênticos retalhos de uma colcha atemporal. As opressões e o regojizo não mudaram muito se levarmos em conta o histórico objetificação da mulher latina e da epifania que ela sente ao encontrar a sua própria sexualidade. É impossível não se emocionar e se fortalecer diante de palavras tão precisas e belas vindas de mulheres jovens experienciadas. A mistura do Inglês e Espanhol também identifica uma busca por identidade nos Estados Unidos cada vez mais xenofóbico. Agradeço muito à Isabel pelo entusiasmo em trocar zines comigo. Esses relatos pessoais de mulheres fortes são o que busco para a próxima edição da minha zine.

St. Sucia is a collaborative zine founded by Isabel Ann Castro and Natasha I. Hernandez. The eighth edition called “Sangre y Agua” features stories, poems, and illustrations of Latin American girls who catalyze the pains and joys of themselves and of their mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. They are authentic flaps of a timeless quilt. The oppression and the joy haven’t changed much with time if we consider the historical objectification of the Latin woman and the epiphany that she feels in finding her own sexuality. It is impossible not to be moved and strengthened by such precise and beautiful words from experienced young women. The mix of English and Spanish also identifies a search for identity in an increasingly xenophobic United States. I thank Isabel for her enthusiasm in trading zines with me. These personal accounts of strong women are what I seek for the next issue of my zine.

Esquizofrenia
Quando estive em São Paulo pela primeira vez, fiz questão de passar pela Galeria Nova Barão, e ao encontrar a loja “Locomotiva Discos” fiquei logo encantada por dois discos lado a lado perto da entrada: Slip It In do Black Blag e o álbum homônimo do Bikini Kill (são minhas bandas punk preferidas). Caminhando pela loja, encontrei numa cesta, a última cópia da zine Esquizofrenia feita pelo dono da loja, Gilberto Custódio Junior. Fiquei interessada na zine logo de cara, pois fiz a matemática: Schizophrenia(música do Sonic Youth do álbum Sister)+ Kim Gordon+Lydia Lunch+ Death Valley ‘69= coisas que me amarro bastante. Essa edição da Esquizofrenia traz uma coleção de resenhas sobre álbuns, shows e livros, inclusive sobre o “Garota na Banda” da Kim Gordon, que também fiz no meu Blog. As resenhas não se restringem ao mundo do rock e incluem curiosidades relevantes sobre as obras tratadas. A ideia de listar o que ouviu durante os dias de diagramação da zine é genial e penso em colocar em alguma futura edição.

When I was in São Paulo for the first time, I visited the Nova Barão Gallery and when I found the “Locomotiva Discos” store I was immediately captivated by two side-by-side records near the entrance: Black Blag’s Slip It In and Bikini Kill’ self-titled album(these are my favorite punk bands). Walking around the store, I found in a basket the latest copy of the Esquizofrenia zine made by the store owner, Gilberto Custódio Junior. I was interested in the zine right away because I did the math: Schizophrenia (Sonic Youth song from Sister album) + Kim Gordon + Lydia Lunch + Death Valley ’69 = things that I am mad about. This issue of Esquizofrenia brings a collection of reviews of albums, concerts, and books, including Kim Gordon’s “Girl in the Band,” which I also reviewed on my Blog. Reviews are not restricted to the world of rock and include relevant curiosities about the works in question. The idea of listing what he heard during the days of zine layout is brilliant and I think of doing the same in some future issue.

Afrofuturista
A MC e Freestyleira Manu transmitiu o espírito faça você mesmo ao montar a zine Afrofuturista num formato original, agrupando em pequenos espaços, profundos poemas-protesto. Adquiri suas zines em um evento direcionado ao Dia Internacional dos Direitos Humanos, onde a artista anunciou aceitar qualquer contribuição em troca das zines a fim de arrecadar fundos para uma viagem em que se apresentaria com seu trabalho musical. Mais uma atitude do it yourself . Os poemas dessa edição da Afrofuturista abordam estupro, LGBTfobia, violência doméstica e um chamado escrito à caneta, aos negros que resistem através do rap e hip hop. O espaço que a mulher tem conquistado no rap, hip hop, funk, rock e, entre outros gêneros, é grandioso, mas ainda há muito machismo impedindo a mulher negra e/ou de periferia de alcançar mais lugares. É preciso seguir vigilante e lutando, e Manu é uma dessas mulheres que deveríamos ouvir com mais frequência.

MC and Freestyle singer Manu conveyed the DIY spirit by assembling the Afrofuturista zine in an original format, grouping in small spaces, deep protest poems. I got her zines at an International Human Rights Day event, where the artist announced that she would accept any contribution in exchange for the zines in order to raise funds for a trip to perform with her musical work. Another “do it yourself” attitude. The poems in this issue of Afrofuturista talk about rape, LGBTphobia, domestic violence and a pen-written call to blacks who resist through rap and hip hop. The space that women have conquered in rap, hip hop, funk, rock , etc., is huge, but there is still a lot of machismo preventing black and / or periphery women from reaching more places. You have to be vigilant and keep fighting, and Manu is one of those women we should listen to most often.

Não Fale com Paredes
A última das zines que adquiri esse ano foi a do meu namorado que é do Rio de Janeiro, Pietro Luigi. “Não Fale com Paredes” surgiu da música de mesmo nome da banda de rock progressivo Módulo Mil. Após anos idealizando uma zine, Pietro se sentiu inspirado tanto pela minha zine quanto pelo som de uma banda que conheceu aqui em Aracaju, The Baggios. Na zine é possível encontrar uma matéria sobre a trajetória da banda, como também sobre um dos zineiros das antigas mais respeitados, Leonardo Panço. O nordeste ainda marca presença na zine com a entrevista concedida pelo multiartista e vocalista da banda pernambucana, Ave Sangria, Marco Polo. Na contracapa, há ótimas referências de lugares pra ouvir e adquirir música, inclusive a Freedom do vocalista da Karne Krua, que também foi zineiro, Silvio Campos. A primeira edição também contém meu relato sobre como me tornei zineira. Foi a partir dele que tive a ideia de escrever esse post aqui no medium.

The last of the zines I acquired this year was from my boyfriend from Rio de Janeiro , Pietro Luigi. “Não Fale com Paredes” came from the eponymous song of the progressive rock band Módulo Mil. After years of idealizing a zine, Pietro was inspired by both my zine and the sound of a band he met here in Aracaju, The Baggios. In the zine, you can find a story about the band’s trajectory, as well as the story of one the most respected oldschool zinesters, Leonardo Panço. The northeast of Brazil is still present in the zine with the interview given by the multi-artist and singer of the band, Ave Sangria, Marco Polo. On the back cover, there are great references to places to listen and buy music, including Freedom from Karne Krua singer, who was also a zine writer, Silvio Campos. The first issue also contains my account of how I became a zinester. The idea of writing this post on medium also came from my personal report.
